The Mariel boat lift was a defining moment in Cuban history. Over 100,000 cubans made their way onto boats and deported their Island Nation seeking a better life in the US. This is how Shoe Gallery owner Abram Waserstein came to this country.
This Reebok Ventilator collaboration takes its inspiration from that historic moment. The shiny White upper with Blue interior is meant to symbolize the boat, but there are also a host of other details that pay homage to the memory. Immediately you will notice “FL” “305” and “US” on the heels of the shoe as tributes to Miami, but if you look closely at the Outsole you will see an anchor and a boat registration number. It’s hard to think of a sneaker that has more personal and emotional connection to its design than these. As diplomatic relations with Cuba have evolved significantly over the past year, the timing for this collaboration couldn’t be more poignant.
